MOSCOW: President Asif Ali Zardari has urged the international community to
fully support Pakistan's efforts in war against terrorism and help it in
overcoming the multitude of challenges including winning hearts and minds of
people.
‘This is the challenge of our times and a challenge for the world. We have two
wars. One is physical one against militants; the other is to look after the
internally displaced people. The world has to come forward to support us,’
President Zardari said in an interview with television channel Russia Today.
President Zardari, who is in Russia to attend the summit of Shanghai Cooperation
(SCO) said Pakistan also needed the support of the international community in
order to win the people’s hearts and minds.
The President said the military operation in Pakistan had full public support,
as the people had risen against the militants.
He said the country's people were in favour of democracy and were supporting the
government's endeavours in this regard.
‘Democracy always brings dignity to all regimes and is proving to be
working...People have taken responsibility and this is the secret of the success
of this operation,’ the President said.
On Pak-Russia ties, President Zardari said these were moving towards a ‘very
constructive level’.
‘My objective is to bring Russia and Pakistan together so that we can understand
each other better,’ he said.
Zardari said Pakistan wished to get full membership of SCO so as to contribute
to lasting peace and stability in Asia.
‘It [SCO] is a very farsighted concept...[which] will lead to more future trade,
regional responsibility and regional support,’ he said.
On United States' Pak-Afghan policy, President Zardari said the Obama
administration was looking into the situation, adding that ‘we are waiting and
hoping for the best.’ |
