Officials said that 15 militants were killed in Serwakai sub division of the
South Waziristan and Jandola while four soldiers lost their lives and 22 others
wounded. Over two dozens soldiers had lost contact with their base in Jandola
during clashes, but reached safely Sunday morning.
Militants told local journalists that they had suffered only four casualties and
three wounded. A militant commander claimed that several soldiers who were
arrested during attack on Jandola Fort were beheaded. Both sides’ claims could
not be verified independently.
The area has been gripped by tension and civilians are fleeing their homes after
the Pakistan army sent troops to Chegmalai following a warning from Baitullah
Mehsud to pull out troops from the area.
Taliban in North Waziristan have also issued a warning to the government to
reduce troop movements on main roads and withdraw regular troops from main check
posts.
Heavy clashes took place in the Mehsud areas of the South Waziristan and its
adjacent Jandola area when militants attacked check posts and a main fort. Local
people said that clashes started at 10pm and continued till 5am Sunday.
Security officials said that hundreds of militants attacked the fort late night
and they used heavy weapons. Security forces launched a retaliatory strike and
repulsed attackers.
In a separate incident, militants captured a security post in Khaisoor area.
Troops launched a counter-attack and recaptured the post before dawn.
Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that miscreants attacked a security
forces check post last night in Spinkai Raghazai. The attack was repulsed
successfully, inflicting heavy casualties on militants. Reportedly, 15 militants
were killed.
The official statement said that last night, in another incident of exchange of
fire 10 militants were killed in Warza. Sources said that reinforcements had
been sent to Chegmalai and security forces were strengthening their positions. |
