Though water is considered to be a main source of life, it can prove to be quite
hazardous for small kids and children, especially when it is the form of
standing water. Standing water poses one of the most potent threats of drowning
for kids, especially if you do not practice enough vigilance. Places like
beaches and swimming pools and things like bath tubs, water storage tanks, big
buckets and tube are especially risky for kids. Parents should keep a strict
check on their children while they are in the vicinity of such places or
objects. Make sure you accompany the child and keep an eye on his/her
activities. Check out some water safety advice given below, for ensuring the
wellbeing of your children.
Water Safety Tips for Kids
* One of the best ways to stay safe from water is to learn swimming. However,
one should follow proper instructions while swimming.
* Make sure the children are supervised by a lifeguard while swimming.
* Children should take precautions and wear a proper personal floatation device,
when in or around water.
* Observe the sign posts, such as dangerous, too cold, too far from safety, too
much sun, too much strenuous activity, etc, quite carefully.
* Children should swim in water that is less than chest deep.
* Keep yourself informed about the water environment and its potential hazards.
The more informed you are, the safer you will be.
* While the kids are learning swimming, they should also be taught how to
prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies.
* The kids should always stay within supervision. Keep them within an arm's
reach when they are around standing water at home. This can include buckets,
bathtubs, toilets and spas.
* Be vigilant while kids are having bath. Be personally present and do not ask
older siblings to supervise the younger ones, around standing water.
* Baby bath seats are not a safety device and should never substitute for adult
supervision.
* Make sure you drain the water from the bathtub immediately after use.
* Electrical appliances such as blow dryers and radios should not be placed near
sinks and tubs. When kids are around, they should be strictly kept out of their
reach.
* Ensure that children remain at a safe distance from water heater as well as
hot water, to prevent them from the risk of burns and scalds.
* While bathing children, fill cold water first and then add warm water.
* The bathroom doors of your house should be properly closed and door knob
should be covered, to prevent children from accessing bathrooms.
* Make use of toilet seat locks and keep toilet lids shut to reduce the risk of
any accident.
* Empty all buckets immediately after use and secure them upside down.
* Large buckets and tubs should be kept out of children's reach
