Babies are curious about everything right from birth. They love to look at
bright colors in the crib and mom’s smiling face again and again. As a newborn,
babies can only see what is within 8 to 10 inches from their eyes and thus, she
starts recognizing mother’s face as she feeds and nurses the baby. The most
preferred sight for your baby is her mom as she feels safest with her. This not
only helps the baby to recognize you but is also a great bonding process between
you and the baby.
As baby’s vision sharpens, she learns to recognize dad, other caregivers and
family members and eventually pets and frequent visitors of the family. At
first, babies see everything in only black and white but they acquire the
ability to distinguish colors by the time they are two months old. So, it is
advisable to not only invest in black and white toys or blankets and buy other
bright colors that babies will love in a few months too. Babies seem to find
people’s faces most interesting and read and observe them for long. It has also
be seen that familiar faces and surroundings make baby feel secure and
reassured.
Within a few months, babies start recognizing face expressions and start
attributing them to certain feelings. They understand facial expressions better
than words and may try to imitate them too. Infants also love to see pictures of
other babies. Babies are smarter than most people credit them with and they
notice changes in scenery, any changes that you make in décor or shifting
position of things. It may also mean that they would resist the change in the
beginning such as moving the crib to another position or repainting a wall or
shifting houses and you may have to soothe the baby until she feels comfortable
in the new surroundings.
