Urinary tract consists of kidneys, bladder and urethra and an infection in it is
known as Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Kidneys remove the waste products from
the blood, bladder stores them as urine and urethra is a tube that carries the
urine from the bladder to outside the body. Here is a list of symptoms that
indicate that the child may be suffering from a UTI:
* Back pain,
* Bloody urine,
* Burning sensation or pain when urinating,
* Child is irritable or fussy,
* Child is suffering from tummy pain,
* Child seems less active,
* Child wets the bed and clothes even if he or she is potty trained,
* Diarrhea,
* Fever,
* Frequent urination though only small amounts of urine get passed,
* Urine of the child has a bad smell, and
* Vomiting.
Bacteria or germs that reach bladder or the kidneys cause the UTIs. Main reasons
of germs reaching kidneys are:
* Girls wiping from back to front instead of front to back after a bowel
movement,
* Having bubble baths,
* Holding urine for a long time,
* Medical condition that does not allow bladder to empty all the way, and
* Tight-fitting clothes
Antibiotics, given orally in most cases, can treat UTI. In severe cases,
antibiotics may be administered intravenously. You should follow doctor’s
instructions carefully and the child should drink plenty of fluids to dilute the
urine. Children should be taught not to hold the urine for long periods of time
and use bathroom several times each day. Uncircumcised boys should be taught to
wash the foreskin on his penis regularly.
