Toddlers do not understand modesty until they are five years old. They do not
understand the need to do things that are socially acceptable. Wearing clothes
may seem an unnecessary burden to the innate barbaric in them. They may like
their birthday suits and parents have been embarrassed when their child insists
on being a nudist or strip off his clothes and streak in a party with a broad
grin on their faces. Here are some tips that you can use to make your child keep
on their clothes, especially when somebody is around:
* Angry words, shouting or punishing the child when he disrobes may just have a
negative impact on the child. Like all other ‘bad’ behaviors, he may try to
repeat it again and again, just to get your attention.
* If you cannot ignore the habit of stripping clothes in the child, at least try
to be calm. Speak gently to the person and do not try to accuse the child and
make him feel vulnerable. Speak in third person and explain the child that he or
she looks much more beautiful in clothes and that they should not take them off.
For example, say “Harry looks so beautiful in his red T-shirt. Why would he ever
think of taking it off, when he shouldn’t?”
* The rules about clothes may differ in different households. While in some
communities, it may be okay for the toddler to walk around with no clothes on,
in other communities, it may be considered very shameful and staying covered is
compulsory. You have to let the child know about his boundaries and enforce the
rules just like other rules in homes. You can use behavior correction tips given
in this section for the purpose.
* Toddlers may keep stripping off clothes, if they feel overburdened or are too
hot. Make sure that clothes for the baby are soft, light and comfortable for the
child. Cozy clothes in winters and cool clothes in summers will more readily be
tolerated by the kids.
