Ear infections are often a result of accumulation of fluid in the middle ear
that results in growth of germs. This can be very painful when it presses
against the eardrum. It may cause your baby to cry constantly, even between
feedings and at night and would not like to lie flat. You can give your infant
the appropriate dose of infant pain reliever and keeping him upright and let the
fluid drain away from the eardrum to ease these earaches.
Call the doctor, if the baby’s ears look infected who may prescribe an
antibiotic. If ear infections are not treated properly and are persistent then
they may result in hearing loss and consequent speech delay. It has been seen
that breastfed infants have fewer ear infections. While feeding the baby with
the bottle, keep him upright. In case of colds, suction his nose to prevent
germs from entering the ear and control allergens such as cigarette smoke, dust,
and animal dander because they can cause fluid buildup in the ear.
