Colicky babies can be a nightmare to their parents and all sleep-deprived
parents who are at a loss of how to comfort their hurting babies and have
exhausted trying everything to soothe their children are eager to get as much
information as they can to help their poor and helpless child. It may be a
comfort to them to know that about 20 percent of all babies are colic and they
or their baby are not alone in their ordeal and that the baby will outgrow this
condition, sometime between three to six months of age. Colic usually surfaces
around three weeks of age and babies suffering from it may typically cry for
more than three hours a day, more than three times a week for more than three
weeks.
According to some experts, these intense crying episodes occur when infants are
slow in learning the skill of comforting, calming or soothing themselves.
However, no one has yet figured out the real cause behind colic. The major
factors that are pointed out as the possible reason behind colic or babies being
so inconsolable and fussy are intestinal and neurological. Being a colic does
not in anyway affect baby’s future temperament or personality or how they turn
out. There is no specific cure for colic but you may consult your doctor, if
your baby keeps crying even after 3 or 4 months of age to make sure that he does
not suffer from some other problem such as reflux.
