Little children tend to experiment with anything that they can get their hands
on. Small objects lying on the floor often find their way into the mouths of
crawling babies and are spitted out only if they taste unpleasant. Chewing on
objects often lead to choking. Younger children are more prone to choking as
their airway passage and gastrointestinal tract have smaller diameters. Here are
some suggestions that will help you to prevent choking in children:
* Avoid putting anything around baby’s neck including string or scarves.
* Buy toys, whose smaller parts cannot be broken by kids.
* Children less than four years old should not be given grapes, raw vegetables,
sliced hot dogs, nuts, popcorn and hard candy that can get lodged in their
throats.
* Cribs should always be placed away from cords hanging from blinds or
draperies.
* Do not let small things lie astray on the floor or where children can pick
them up.
* In case of emergencies, you will be thankful that you learnt the infant CPR
and choking procedures in time. Do not procrastinate on this.
* Make sure that you remove drawstrings from all children's clothing.
* Read guidelines on toy packaging carefully and make sure that it does not
present a choking hazard to your child.
* Small objects such as plastic bags, buttons, coins and balloons should be kept
out of reach of children.
